What is Microcephaly?

Microcephaly or "small head" occurs in about 2% of the population. It can be caused by genetics, syndromes, or injuries. The current standard for microcephaly is a head circumference measuring  3 or more deviations below normal on the growth chart. Microcephaly touches each person differently, so the variation of signs and symptoms is vast. Some microcephalic children have no signifiers other than the below-average head and brain size. Others may be severely effected and require constant care and supervision. No doctor can predict the person's quality of life, struggles, or health concerns for the future. It truly is a wait-and-see disorder. Regardless of the severity of the disorder, those with microcephaly are amazing and beautiful. They deserve every happiness and provision possible to ensure they have the best life available to them. Love them, cherish them, and know that no matter what, they are still the same sweet, loving, fun people you know them to be.

  1. Hey Sarah!
I have been wanting to get in touch with you, but didn't know how since I'm not on facebook or anything. I've been wondering how you and Silas have been doing for quite some time (and the rest of your family, too!).

My Erin is now 20 months old (can't believe how time flies!) and I'm expecting a little boy in December. What makes me think of you and Silas is that my little boy's first name, Grady, is the same as your Silas's middle name. Also, Grady is a Severe IUGR baby, and that made me think of you too. I have never gone through this before, since Erin was always 80-90% for size during pregnancy all the way til now, she has just always been a big girl, so having a 5%er baby has thrown me (and my husband!)for a loop since we're big people and don't have any small people in other of our families.

I am still on WM, but there aren't too many moms on there who have had a Severe IUGR baby and I'd love to connect with someone who has been down that journey before!

Please email me at: lwasie01@hotmail.com , I would love to get in touch with you!!

    Thanks so much!

    Liana:)
